BRC Week 2020

In every semester, I would apply for a position in the college to earn more merit. Unlike the previous semester in 2019 where I used to hold a position as a secretariat under the Welfare and Security Unit, last year I was placed under the Management and Protocol Unit with the same position. Having experience working in two different fields is one thing, but another thing I want to highlight is the different scope of works despite both have programs that were occurring during the full week. Whilst the previous position all I had to do was to always stay on alert for the security part, the later position had me doing various tasks regarding the protocol of events.

I’m not trying to be biased, but if I were to choose out of the two fields, I would choose to stay in the Management and Protocol Unit because there are so many things I could learn which will benefit me a lot in the future especially since I’m in communication program. During the BRC Week 2020, I was assigned with copious of different duties for different events, whether from our programs or the other units. One of the adventurous duties is being an emcee for two programs that involved celebrities as the guests. I must say that was indeed something that I would cherish for some time now until I discover something new that I could brag about. It was a tough fight within myself before the events because I rarely present myself as an emcee during such big programs. After all, the last time I became an emcee was for a small event under SISPA with only my batchmates and sergeants, as well as the higher-ups of the organization as the attendees.

However, with attendees came from other colleges as well as outside of UNIMAS, the pressure of being the lead in the programs felt weighing on my shoulder because I was really afraid of making mistakes. Thanks to my other colleagues that worked together in succeeding the events, everything went smoothly, though I did make little mistakes for the first event, with Hazeman Huzir as the guest, while another event with Zulin Aziz. Meanwhile, in another event, Konsert Perdana, which was the highlight of the week, I was in-charged of emcees’ texts and invitations for VIPs. Even though it was my first time involving in the protocol team, I wasn’t even given time to slack off, instead, the experience itself taught me throughout. Honestly, I was clueless about how I was supposed to write texts for emcees, and what was needed for the invitations.

Thank goodness there was a format ready for the text in which all I have to do was filling in the template according to the event’s tentative. On the other hand, I also had to keep in touch with the two emcees to acquire updates from them on what they would prefer and what not to ensure the event, later on, would run better. In the meantime, I had to send invitations to the VIPs which consist of the college’s principal and fellows. Albeit a celebrity, Sarah Suhairi was invited as the guest, it wasn’t my duty to receive updates on her, and that in a way easing my task a little because I didn’t have to carry more tension than it already was. For the invitations or also called RSVP, I was asked to do the follow-ups for the VIPs three times with a limited time given to make sure their attendance was finalized as it would affect the emcees’ texts as well as the seats.

In other events, I would most of the time become either one of the committee members, or become a secretary which wasn’t as busy during the event, but would be as much after the event was done. The secretary’s job was quite tough I would admit concerning that I have other responsibilities as a student. Every detail in the paperwork should be clear and no error at all, and it had to go through the college’s fellows first before reaching the principal and revised it all over again every time there were mistakes. I had to bear sleepless nights before everything was over because the leader of our unit asked all the secretaries of every program to assemble to finish up the paperwork so that the work would be done faster and inquiries could be clarified instantly.

Overall, it was an exhausting week, but also an enthralling one because, amidst the chaos in meeting the expectations of audiences and not making mistakes throughout the week, I would have lied if I said I didn’t enjoy it. I made lots of new friends, acquaintances, and memories. I was hoping to join again this year, yet no chances left. It was unfortunate, but I silently wish to be able to join these activities again soon.

These are among the events that I took part in :
