Strategic Communication was a new program offered by the faculty, which left me flustered when I first received the offer. With no senior to ask nor anyone at all out of this university knew about this course, I tried other options by googling about it but no result could satisfy my curiosity enough especially because the program didn’t seem to be typical in any university. Since I came with certification on Foundation in TESL, I genuinely thought that this program would not be any different than my other friends who received offers in degrees in communication from other universities. As I embarked in this field throughout the years, I slowly learned the difference, though not much.

When I was in my first year, I used to ask for sample final years’ questions from my friends from other universities, but surprisingly, they didn’t learn the same courses as I did. They learned the course that I learned only a year later, the Communication Theory, in their first semester of the first year. Other than the Philosophy in Communication, their courses were not aligned with mine, and so I stopped asking about it later on. Instead, I began to focus on the learning process in what way does this program differs from other communication degrees. I learned the hard way though, it was not easy at all to climb up until here, the sixth semester. With my introverted self, this course seems a lot tougher even though the examination could be scored by studying. Having any soft skill at all is an extra point, and I knew it. I knew it all along but I just could not bring myself to be confident enough to speak up. I did several times but later I just happened to sink in my seat right after I speak up due to insecurities and fear to be judged.

That is an illness which should not be in any of communication students, I agree with that. Hence, throughout these semesters I gathered bits by bits of information to help me in gaining what I needed as well as looking for the career that would fit me well. From the first year, I learned more about the basic part of communication, more like the ethical way of communicating among different groups of ages or communities. It calls Interpersonal Communication. I believed that’s the core subject for a communication student because knowing the right way to interact with others would lead to a better outcome of the communication. Aside from that, all other courses that I’ve learned were varied, such as politics, economics, and society, with all of them circulate on media topics. Somehow, this could vividly explain that the aspects this program covers are centered on media, with wide views which enfold on other areas as well.

In my viewpoint, the ‘strategic’ in the name would most probably refer to the balance but impactful of something in a certain field, and the combination of the two words, ‘strategic’ and ‘communication’ bring meaning to a holistic communicator as the production whether in talents, in views or anything at all, that would give them a much wider future to undertake. I believe that students that have faith in communication core would be best suited in this degree program because the career path is wider than mass communication which only focussed on a media line, and plain communication would be too general. This program on the other hand with specifically mentions the word ‘strategic’, has taught a much detailed view on communication in varied fields. I just realized how far this program could bring me in the future. Now I could be conflicting when it comes to my career path because it keeps on changing every semester, yet I know that someday I would be able to find the best for me. I used to want to be a politician when I was learning Media Politics in my second year, and a crisis communicator the next semester when I learned Risk and Crisis Communication, which were all because of the prominent people who embody the professions looking all charismatic and august, that I couldn’t help to admire.

Yes, the very next semester it changed again whereby I thought I probably would be great as a journalist because of the weekly news we had to write. It felt more real when I had to personally approach someone to interview for the news, but of course, life wasn’t all bed of roses. It wasn’t that easy to find the sources, yet that’s the beauty of writing news because of the thrilling experience which I admit would be much better without this pandemic. Meanwhile, for this semester, I came to realize my tiny talent in graphic designing and this somewhat gives me hope to indulge more in this area soon. So the main point here on why I purposely wrote on the conflict of careers I faced every semester is because these have proven how this program could empower you personally in which learning this program would let someone become more than they could imagine. This program would let the student learning more than just communication to communicate, but to the more depth with better professions that one would never hear of. It is just too broad, and I might still change again the next day, perhaps in the advertising field or as a negotiator? I would never know because this program assuredly gives me options to be in media or politics or economics or just simply the communication field.

As a student with almost three years of experience in this program, I would undoubtedly suggest the future students who want to pursue communication choosing this program instead. It would be worth a shot.
